Statement of Coco Killingsworth, Chair of the Cultural Institutions Group (CIG) Regarding Anti-Semitic Vandalism at Homes of Brooklyn Museum Leaders

New York, NY (June 12th, 2024) The Cultural Institutions Group, which is comprised of 34 of New York City’s large and small city-owned arts and cultural institutions, is appalled and outraged at the vile and reprehensible antisemitism and hatred demonstrated by the vandalism of the home of our colleagues at the Brooklyn Museum including Director Anne Pasternak’s and Brooklyn Museum President,  as well as the homes of Museum trustees. Our community is bound together by a commitment to the power of arts and culture to promote respectful discourse and liberatory expression. Our institutions are places where we safely bring all New Yorkers together on a daily basis to experience art and cultural expression. Our leaders are courageous visionaries, who act as stewards of these world-renowned spaces, and should not have to endure personal threats. This act of terror and hatred, has crossed a clear line and is an affront to those beliefs, our leadership and the City of New York. Our member institutions, which proudly includes the Brooklyn Museum, stand united in denouncing this despicable act in the strongest possible terms. Furthermore, we stand in solidarity with our audiences, visitors and communities in every neighborhood, in all five boroughs. Hatred, vandalism and terror, have no place in Culture.
