Statement of Coco Killingsworth, Chair, Cultural Institutions Group, on the Announced Reversal of Cuts to Culture and Arts.

NEW YORK, NY (April 22nd, 2024) “Since devastating budget cuts to arts and culture were announced in November, our institutions have rallied to roll them back. Today we are pleased to see that our advocacy efforts, and the efforts of our partners in the City Council, in labor, tourism, workforce development and in the greater cultural advocacy community, have resulted in many of those cuts evaporating in the Mayor’s planned Executive Budget. We want to thank Mayor Adams, Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer and Commissioner Laurie Cumbo for heeding our calls to stop the bleeding and for acknowledging the important place arts and culture have in the fabric of our great city. As a result of these restorations, our small, medium and large institutions in all five boroughs will be able to stave off further cuts to programming, operating hours and jobs. However, our work is far from done. We urge the Mayor, the City Council and our advocacy partners to fight even harder to restore all cuts, to baseline arts funding and to renew the "add-on" to the DCLA budget that both sides of City Hall agreed to in years past. Today is a great day for arts and culture. Let’s make sure tomorrow, next year, and the decades to follow are even greater.”

CIG Statement on April 20, 2021
NEW YORK, NY (April 20, 2021) – The Cultural Institutions Group, a collective of 34 arts and culture organizations located in New York City, stands in solidarity with Mr. Floyd’s family, the Black community, and all those yearning for a more peaceful, just, fair and equitable world.

Today’s conviction of Derek Chauvin in the murder of George Floyd is a step in the important fight against systemic racism, inequity and injustice. There is still much work to be done. The demands for change at this critical moment draw on legacies rooted in the long history of the fight against racism and injustice in our city and nation.

We will continue to shine a light on these issues through our exhibitions, partnerships and programming. Not only will we hold ourselves accountable to the communities we reflect and serve through our public-facing work, but we will also continue to advance the goals of equity, diversity, access and inclusion within our own institutions, and together as a coalition, with the intention of contributing to a better future for all New Yorkers.

As a coalition, we are saddened and outraged by the growing violence against the Asian community. It is on all of us to speak up against bigotry and protect our neighbors as these hate crimes, racism and xenophobia are an attack against all of us and the communities we serve.

The increasing horrific incidents of anti-Asian violence across the country highlights the continued work to be done across America. We stand in solidarity with our Asian American & Pacific Islander communities against the continued rising tide of racism and hate crimes.
