Curator of Media Arts

Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI) seeks a Curator of Media Arts to join its curatorial team. The Curator of Media Arts will be a key collaborative partner for developing and implementing exhibitions, public programs, and publications that support the Museum’s mission. The successful candidate will possess deep and wide-ranging knowledge of both contemporary and historical media-based art, and a track record of organizing innovative, engaging exhibitions and programs for a broad audience. The position requires excellent writing and organizational skills and a desire to work collaboratively across departments. This is a full-time exempt position, which reports to the Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs.

Museum of the Moving Image advances the understanding, enjoyment, and appreciation of the art, history, technique, and technology of film, television, and digital media by presenting exhibitions, education programs, significant moving-image works, and interpretive programs, and collecting and preserving moving-image related artifacts.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Working with the Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs and the Executive Director, envision and realize an approach to exhibiting and collecting media-based art that complements the overall mission of the Museum

  • Conceive and organize exhibitions or installations, which includes developing relationships and maintaining communication with artists; writing exhibition text; collaborating with collections and exhibitions staff on logistics, planning, and installation; and adhering to deadlines

  • Collaborate on the development of education and public programs related to exhibitions

  • Work with staff to shape a schedule for exhibitions and public programs

  • Collaborate with staff, as needed, to realize long-term projects

  • Work with development team on grant applications and other fundraising activities

  • Participate in the development and stewardship of the Museum’s collection of time-based media art

  • Develop and write exhibit catalogs and artist monographs, as required

  • Develop, produce, and moderate ongoing artist talks and other public programs

  • Maintain internal communication with all Museum departments as required

  • Other administrative and curatorial tasks as assigned

Qualifications:

  • B.A., M.A. or Ph.D. in Art, Film/Media Studies or a related field a plus

  • A strong record of organizing exhibitions and public programs

  • Demonstrated research capabilities, with a sophisticated understanding of the moving image as an art form, and an innate intellectual curiosity

  • Proven success in collaborating with a diverse population of colleagues, guest curators, and other industry professionals

  • Strong organizational skills; ability to set priorities, yet maintain flexibility in order to respond quickly to new opportunities

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

  • Minimum of 3-5 years relevant experience required

Special Assistant to the Executive Director

MoMI seeks a dynamic and organized professional to serve as assistant to an innovative, industrious, passionate Executive Director at a museum devoted to the art, history, technology, and social impact of moving image media on society, creativity, and culture. The candidate will play a pivotal and highly visible role in the growth and success of the Museum.

This is a full-time exempt position, which reports to the Executive Director.

Essential Duties:

  • Partner with Executive Director to develop and manage efficient time management systems and tools and other operational efficiencies for the organization

  • Strategize with Executive Director to implement efficient communication with the staff and board

  • Assist Executive Director with maintaining daily schedule, priorities, and commitments

  • Promptly respond to and/or escalate communications sent to Executive Director

  • Serve as proxy and trusted intermediary of Executive Director to attend meetings, events, and other activities, as needed

  • Serves as liaison between Executive Director and Board members, Committees, Senior Staff and others

  • Collaborate across departments, especially with the development department, as needed, to create presentations for fundraising opportunities and Board Meetings

  • Enable interaction among Executive Director and staff on special initiatives

  • Be involved in scheduling events, tours, meetings, and calls; communicates agenda and details to all parties involved

  • Assist with various administrative duties as they pertain to Executive Director’s activities

  • Available to Executive Director outside regular business hours, as needed and appropriate, to attend evening and weekend events

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience

  • Exceptional writing and communication skills

  • Drive and ambition

  • Understanding and support of Museum’s mission

  • Interest or even experience in the fields of film, digital media and government affairs

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, demonstrating professionalism, and diplomacy in all interactions with constituents

  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently in a fast-paced work environment

  • Ability to maintain focus and grace under pressure and tight deadlines

  • Highly discreet, maintaining confidentiality at all times

  • High level of personal initiative, resourcefulness and sound judgment
