Brooklyn Museum/Project Reset Teaching Artist (P/T)

In partnership with the Center for Court Innovation’s Project Reset, the Brooklyn Museum seeks a Teaching Artist to facilitate biweekly arts-based programming for one of two groups of Project Reset participants, ages 18–25. Project Reset is an early-diversion program that provides people who have been arrested an opportunity to complete arts-based programming rather than going to court to face formal prosecution. This innovative collaboration brings Project Reset to all of Brooklyn, leveraging the power of the arts to provide a meaningful alternative to conventional prosecution of low-level crimes.

Requirements:

Extensive experience as a teaching artist and a demonstrated history of work that utilizes the arts to facilitate conversation and self-reflection on subjects such as race, justice, accountability, personal agency, and control of one’s narrative
Demonstrated ability to successfully engage young people ages 18–25 from diverse backgrounds
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Capacity to maintain strong relationships with multiple agencies and organizations, both on site and in the larger Brooklyn community
Ability to regularly assess performance and integrate feedback as needed
Creative problem-solving abilities and passion for work at the intersection of art and social justice, especially in the context of criminal justice reform
Applications are encouraged from individuals with any proximity to the justice system, particularly from those with direct experience
Responsibilities:

Lead a highly engaging gallery and studio-based program for up to fifteen Project Reset participants on biweekly Wednesdays or Thursdays, 10 am–1 pm
Critically reflect and strengthen session design by actively participating in biweekly assessment and planning sessions with Museum and Center for Court Innovation staff
Participate in training sessions, including master classes with artists Shaun Leonardo and Derek Fordjour, workshops with Museum staff, and site visits to Brooklyn Justice Initiatives and other Center for Court Innovation projects
Design program curriculum in collaboration with Museum and Center for Court Innovation staff
Cover for the second Teaching Artist on occasion, as needed
Conceptualize the final exhibition that showcases the work created by participants over the project’s first year
