Mellon Collection Fellow

The Studio Museum in Harlem seeks a Collection Fellow to work under the supervision of the Registrar’s Office to assist with object research and acquisition documentation of the permanent collection. The Fellow will provide cataloging support for the Collection & Exhibitions Management team and maintain acquisition and loans files for the permanent collection. The role offers hands on data and object management training in permanent collection documentation which includes verifying tombstone information and linking object condition reports, installation information, insurance details, and rights and reproduction notes. The role will provide an opportunity to learn how to navigate our TMS Collections database, prepare artwork for its institutional ingestion, as well as support inaugural exhibition activities. The one-year position will offer an emerging professional insight into collection care decision making.  

Archives Fellow

The Studio Museum in Harlem is seeking an Archives Fellow, to join the growing Collections & Exhibitions Management team responsible for the Museum’s permanent and special collections, exhibitions, and archives. Reporting to the Studio Museum's Archivist and working in close collaboration with the curatorial and collections management stakeholders, the Archives Fellow will support the ongoing processing of the Studio Museum's institutional records and assist in the creation of Encoded Archival Description (EAD) finding aids. The Archives Fellow will work in consultation with the Museum Archivist to define and follow processing standards and create standardized descriptions, to ensure consistency and quality for the overall project.

Museum Maintainer / Art Handler, Collections (Temporary)

The Museum Maintainer / Art Handler for Collections will be part of a team in the Registration and Collections Management department, handling art in the collections and assisting with storage initiatives. The ideal candidate will have experience handling and installing a variety of objects. They will work closely with the Registration and Collections Management and Conservation teams in supporting the Museum’s collection-related activities.

This position is funded for a term of three years (subject to renewal).

Photographer—Digital Collections and Services

The Photographer creates high-resolution digital images of objects in the museum’s permanent collection, libraries, archives, and exhibition installations for the purpose of documentation and in support of publications, marketing and promotion of exhibitions, graphic and exhibition design, merchandising, commercial partnerships, digital audience engagement projects, and external reproduction requests.

The position plays a key role in developing and maintaining technical standards with respect to the museum’s image production, and, in collaboration with the Director of Digital Collections and Services, continually assesses new technology and procedures necessary to create engaging visual assets in alignment with the museum’s goals.

Project Objects Conservator, Egyptian Coffin—Conservation

As a highly engaged member of the Conservation team, the Project Objects Conservator, Egyptian Coffin, will engage in the study and treatment of an ancient Egyptian wooden coffin. This is a two-year term position with the Objects Conservation team and the Curator of Egyptian, Classical, and Ancient Near Eastern Art, under the direction of the Conservator of Objects.

Director of Collections

The Museum of the City of New York seeks an experienced and visionary leader to strategize and implement long-term goals and manage daily operations of the Museum’s Collections Department.

The Director of Collections will have the responsibility for overseeing a diverse collection with respect to accessibility, stewardship, and strategic planning, and for shaping a department to implement those goals. This person will lead by example on issues of diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion and will align the Department’s strategy with the Museum’s commitment to fostering understanding of the manifold diversity of New York City.

The Director of Collections has primary oversight of areas of museum registration, object
installation, contracts, exhibition coordination and implementation, and collections care and
digitization. The Director will oversee collection management of all works in the MCNY
collection, and on loan, including safe handling, care, conservation, accurate record keeping,
accessioning, cataloging, insurance, storage, providing access, deaccessions, and coordinating loans to other institutions. The Director will also oversee exhibition installation coordination, including the safe packing and shipping of art works, installations practices, negotiating contracts, customs, and the management of traveling exhibitions.

Collections and Exhibitions Assistant

The Museum of the City of New York seeks a Collections and Exhibitions Assistant, to be responsible for the routine maintenance of the Museum collections both onsite and at an offsite storage facility. The Collections and Exhibitions Assistant will assist with exhibition preparation and logistics including but not limited to, object documentation, artifact, and artwork preparation, generating forms, and proofreading exhibition text. The Assistant will work five days a week onsite at the Museum located at 1220 Fifth Avenue, during the Monday through Friday 9-5 work week.

This position is a full-time, temporary position through December 31, 2021.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the physical handling, preparation and documentation of artifacts and artwork including storage, inventory, framing and matting, and related database maintenance

  • Generate exhibition loan letters and agreements, condition reports, object receipts, forms, and correspondence

  • Proofread exhibition text, scripts, and guides

  • Secure rights and permissions for use in exhibitions

  • Oversee shipments, packing, unpacking, and routine work in museum galleries

  • Perform exhibition and storage maintenance, such as collecting climate control data, cleaning cases and maintaining inventory and condition of framing stock, preparation supplies, and related materials

  • Maintain Collections and Exhibitions Department files

  • Other duties as assigned
