Benefits Administrator

Summary: The HR team at The Public Theater is a key department driving the development of the employee experience for an incredibly talented group of colleagues across an internationally renowned, not-for-profit, Off-Broadway theatrical organization. The Part-time Benefits Administrator is responsible for administering the day-to-day operations of group benefits programs (group health, dental, vision, short-term and long-term disability, worker's compensation, life insurance, flexible spending plans, retirement plans, etc.). The Public’s New York City based location employs approximately 200 full and part-time employees, as well as 300+ variable hour employees staffing productions throughout the season.

The Benefits Administrator position will handle leave administration and the navigation of all organizational and government coverage programs. The Benefits Administrator provides excellent customer service, streamlines existing programs, and creates accurate reporting tools for the HR department. This position reports to the Director of HR Operations.

Company Manager

The Public Theater is seeking a Company Manager to join the team. As the Company Manager, you will manage a roster of Public Theater mainstage productions. You will report to the Senior Company Manager and be a member of the General Management department of the Public Theater.

Patron Programs Manager

The Public Theater is seeking a Patron Programs Manager. The Patron Programs Manager will work to cultivate, solicit, and steward individual donors for The Public Theater with a focus on strategies to attract new general gift donors giving below $100 and members giving $100 or more, and to encourage existing members to increase or upgrade their current level of support. This position within the Individual Giving team will report to the Director, Patron Programs and Services.

Patron Programs Assistant

The Public is seeking a temporary Patron Programs Assistant. This position is responsible for providing exceptional customer service to donors, as well as exceptional administrative and ticketing support to a busy Individual Giving team.


This is a temporary, hourly position at 30 hours a week. Hours may vary during peak production periods. Qualified candidates must be able to commit for an engagement of May 1st to September 1st, 2023.

The ideal candidate will be organized, excellent at tracking projects, an outstanding communicator, as well as administrative experience in database organization.

This is a hybrid role, and we expect this person to be in office Tuesday through Thursday of each week.

Call Center Representative – Part Time Remote

The Public is seeking a customer service-oriented, bright, and friendly person to join us on our Call Center Team to provide exemplary customer service to our guests as well as excellent administrative skills to help support our teams.

The ideal candidate will have experience in call-center ticketing and have a welcoming and friendly attitude. We’re looking for a thorough, efficient person with a flexible schedule and the initiative to work independently and as part of a team. Please note that this position will typically require sitting or standing for long periods of time using a computer.

Front Desk Attendant/Golf Cart Driver

The Operations Department is seeking part-time Front Desk Attendants to provide exceptional customer service at the 440 Lafayette Street (Public Studios) Information Desk. As a Front Desk Attendant, you will serve as the face of The Public for patrons and as a liaison between artists and staff, and between departments. As a Golf Cart Driver, you will be responsible for the safe and expedient transit of guests through Central Park to and from the Delacorte Theater.

Board Governance Specialist

The Public Theater is seeking a Board Governance Specialist to provide exceptional service to a 50-person board. The Board Governance Specialist will: provide essential project coordination and support for Public Theater Board operations; coordinate members of the senior management team around board communication and engagement; and provide administrative support to ensure records are accurately maintained and governance procedures are upheld. The Board Governance Specialist will report to the Administrative Chief of Staff.

Director of Marketing

The Public Theater seeks a Director of Marketing to join the Marcomms leadership team to oversee the marketing of The Public’s robust slate of annual productions and institutional programs with an emphasis on earned revenue, strategy, advertising, promotion, brand affinity, and audience development.

The Director of Marketing reports to, and will work closely with, the Chief Marketing Officer and is a member of the Marcomms leadership team along with the Director of Communications, the Art Director, the Director of New Media, and Senior Managers of Marketing and Audience Services. The department is supported by a marketing manager, associate marketing manager, and two marcomms associates.

Senior Digital Content Manager

The Public Theater was founded in 1954 on the principles that theater is an essential cultural force and that art and culture belong to everyone. The Public is seeking a creative, strategic, and collaborative social media and digital content professional to join its Communications Team to amplify the theater’s artists, productions, programs, mission, and values through innovative and engaging social media content and campaigns.

Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Senior Digital Content Manager is responsible for the strategic oversight and day-to-day administration of The Public’s social media channels. The Senior Manager oversees the full scope of all channels, including but not limited to analytics, scheduling, and content development. The Senior Manager also oversees the production of all digital content for The Public’s season of productions, programs, events, and institutional milestones.

The Public Theater, one of the nation’s largest not-for-profit theaters, seeks an experienced individual to join the organization as the Senior Manager, Workforce Development Programs.

This person will develop, manage, and support the institution’s programing supporting Talent and Workforce Development and will collect, process, and manage data related to these programs. This position reports to the Senior Director of Human Resources.

Marketing and Communications Associate

The Public is seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented, collaborative associate to join its Marketing and Communications teams to support the institution’s sales, public relations, and promotional efforts.

Reporting to the Director of Marketing, will be responsible for a variety of daily administrative tasks with emphasis on The Public’s e-mail marketing strategy, website and media relations support.

Off Site Summer Project Manager

The Public Theater seeks an entrepreneurial Off-Site Summer Project Manager for a project-based full time position lasting through December 2024. This role will work closely with the Director of Producing and Artistic Planning to plan and line produce an off-site, large-scale season at multiple locations throughout the 2024 summer season.

Patron Programs Associate

The Public Theater is seeking a Patron Programs Associate. This position is responsible for providing exceptional customer service to donors and administrative and ticketing support to a busy Individual Giving team. The Associate will provide support for the Partners and Supporters Programs, donor communications, and gift processing among other duties and reports to the Director, Patron Programs and Services.  

Artistic Programs Coordinator

The Artistic Programs Coordinator is responsible for but not limited to the following responsibilities:

Supporting Artistic Programs in administrative and programmatic duties.
Supports coordination of joint projects with each department.
Acts as a liaison within Artistic Programs and will interact with various departments within the Public Theater

Associate, Special Events

The Public Theater is seeking a Development Associate, Special Events who will report to the Manager, Special Events and be an integral member of the Special Events Department which can execute over 100 events a year. The Development Associate, Special Events will provide support for the successful execution of all cultivation events, fundraising events, and Opening Nights at the Public Theater, including events during Shakespeare in the Park, the Annual Gala, and the downtown season. This position requires an individual who is highly detail-oriented, can work on multiple projects at once, and works well in a fast-paced environment.

Box Office Lead Associate

The Box Office Associate Lead (LEAD) is responsible for assisting patrons with all ticketing and purchase needs of The Public Theater, Joe’s Pub and Free Shakespeare in the Park, as well as constituents of any festivals hosted at The Public or constituents of organizations that are co-producing work at The Public. Possessing strong customer services skills, the LEAD serves patrons efficiently, accurately, and politely at all points of contact. The LEAD acts as a steward of The Public Theater and helps convey The Public and all our artistic program’s season and the company’s mission to people and the interested public. The LEAD will assume the lead of daily Box Office functions and management when either the Box Office Manager or Associate Manager is not present to represent the organization. The LEAD understands and ensures the highest level of guest satisfaction to our guests, supporters, partners, corporate or foundation donors, community members, and any other member of the public they may encounter, based on The Public Theater Policies and Procedures Handbook.

Accounting/Payroll Associate

Reporting to the Controller, the Accounting/ Payroll Associate supports the Senior Accountant with the daily accounting operations of the finance department and a daily focus supporting the Accounts Payable and cash management with the Finance Associate to ensure accuracy and timeliness of 300+ weekly payments. Also supports the Payroll Specialist in weekly and bi-weekly payroll processing and reconciliations. 

Director, Corporate Partnerships

The Public Theater seeks a Director, Corporate Partnerships to join the Marcomms leadership team and oversee a diverse portfolio of 30+ corporations, particularly in the New York market, representing a broad range of industries including, financial, travel, law, technology, media, and hospitality. The role will be responsible for all aspects of each partnership, including retention and renewal, particularly around The Public’s Free Shakespeare in the Park program, as well as acquiring new partnerships across the institution’s annual season and with its programs, to deliver an annual contributed revenue goal of $1.750M. A demonstrated understanding of corporate relationship management and acquisition strategies is key to success. The Public believes the best partnerships deliver value on all sides, striving to create long-term relationships that align the mission and brand of The Public with a partner’s CSR, and business objectives.

The Director, Corporate Partnerships reports to, and will work closely with, the Chief Marketing Officer and is a member of the Marcomms leadership team along with the Director of Communications, the Director of Marketing, the Art Director, the Director of Audience Services, and the Director of New Media. The role is supported by the Senior Manager of Development Communications, Marketing Manager and Associate Marketing Manager. The role will also partner with an external acquisition consultant on prospect and acquisition strategies and intersect with the Senior Director of Development and the Associate Director of Strategic Advancement.
